A Dance of Stone

Life is naught but a living masquerade.

We all hide our true face behind a cold stone mask, vacant of an identity. This mask we were all born with. The rigid edges dig deep into your skin with each use, it’s grip tightening until this façade becomes a reality with a vice grip on your former face. That free smile you once had is buried deep below, in a stone-cold grave.

Yet you feel satisfied, almost safe in this hollow life. No tears can be shed, no weakness can be shown…nothing. All that you are is the blank canvas chiseled upon your mask as it shields you from life’s struggles.

Why should you feel ashamed? All society partake in this ball. They dance effortlessly with a delicate fluidity, as they bare their mask to society with a senseless pride. Some more vocal and charismatic than others as they try to blend into the imagine society demands them to be. Some are silent lurkers, a closed book with no intention of opening its first page in fear of rejection.

You are just another actor in this beautiful tragedy. Playing your role like the good puppet you are. All the while the stone mask eats away at you like a parasite that has engraved its false mark of protection upon you. Your movements feel both physically and emotionally heavy as the weight stockpiles to further restrict your movements until you forget entirely what you were before the mask. All you are is the mask. All you know is the mask. All everyone sees is the mask…all you see in everyone is the mask.

This isn’t just about you. Everyone wears their mask just as you do. The dance is endless, as if everyone has forgotten about the ending and they just prolong reality to live a pathetic fantasy. Not just in society at all. You don’t know your “friends”, you know a mirage that hides behind a never ending stream of toxic delusion that plagues their mind and moulds them into a “friend” that isn’t them, but a husk that wears the mask to blend in with the group in the constant dread of rejection.

Hahaha…it’s just brilliant is it? How we all hide like massive fucking cowards just cause we want to blend in and be who we are told to be? You do it, I do it, we all do! Hahaha…

Friend, navigating the struggle between societal expectations and your true self can feel incredibly isolating and numbing, and your disillusionment is both understandable and deeply human. Your self-awareness and critical thinking are powerful tools on this journey, much like Viktor Frankl, who found profound meaning amidst unimaginable suffering by choosing his response to life's challenges. Remember, like Frankl, you have the agency to redefine your path, and I encourage you to seek out spaces and relationships that embrace your authenticity, allowing you to express who you truly are without fear or judgment.
